In today’s financial landscape you need a more comprehensive approach to managing your finances. An approach and a philosophy that plans not only for today and tomorrow, but for your retirement years as well.
With so many options and technical terms out there…you may be asking yourself, do I use a financial planner or advisor, investment advisor, a stockbroker (non-existent anymore), etc…
A pure investment advisor focuses on performance, the client exists for investments…whereas Calvert Investment Counsel believes investment is a tool, a means to an end and the process is financial management.
We are experts at wealth management, which is not just managing investments but planning too. A pure financial planner may be good at planning but poor at managing investments (asset allocation).
Our expert advisors are skilled at integrating both into your short and long-term life goals.
At Calvert Investment Counsel we do this by incorporating both art and science. The science aspect is based on cutting-edge technology and advanced efficiencies, and the art aspect is based on the wisdom, decisions, risk tolerance, and managing market cycles, while working individually with you our client.
Within this we provide a broad spectrum of services to help you with including:
- Financial Planning
- Retirement Planning
- Long term care
- Liability Management
- Estate Planning
There are 2 main types of investing – Passive Investing and Active Investing
The main difference between Passive Investing and Active Investing is like being an investor or a trader (buy and sell frequently).
With active management you are paying per trade (commission-based transactions), someone to try and beat the market, usually failing to achieve consistent good results.
This can also create a conflict between the advisor and the client, because with active management there is more a financial incentive to the advisor, which always isn’t in the client’s best interest (more trades = more money to the advisor).
Here at Calvert Investment Counsel we utilize Passive Investing, and as a Passive Investing Advisor we are one of only a handful of firms throughout the country that have access to DFA (Dimensional Fund Advisors).
DFA only offers their funds through a select group of fee-only advisors.
Founded in 1981, DFA was created to apply academic theory to the real world of portfolio management. Its approach is rooted in the belief that markets are “efficient” and investors’ returns are mainly determined by asset allocation decisions – not dependent upon the elusive goals of a superior stock selection or market timing that frequently prove to be the downfall of other advisors.
Calvert receives no compensation from DFA for using its funds but plays a key role in educating clients about asset class investing, developing portfolio allocations to meet objectives, and helping them maintain the necessary discipline to ensure long-term success.
This means to you that Calvert always puts your best interest first and we receive no financial incentives, compensation, or direct benefit to do so otherwise.

Our Wealth Management Process
This planning process leads to the development and implementation of a well-diversified investment program that is tailored to satisfy the specific objectives and risk tolerances of each individual client.
Your asset allocation will determine your outcome and risk, and will generate returns within a risk level that you are comfortable with. We do this specific to each and every client based on the risk level that is in your specific comfort zone.
Psycho Metric Risk Profiling
We do psycho-metric risk profiling for you, which tells a sense of your emotional tolerance for risk.
It focuses on 2 issues:
- Tolerance for risk – your emotional capacity and your comfort for risk.
- Capacity for risk – for you to meet your financial objectives you need to take on a certain amount of risk.
Ideally these 2 are the same, but not always. By integrating this into our proprietary wealth management planning process, it enables us to more closely match your plan to your personal capacity and comfort for risk.
Utilization of technology to reduce risk
The other thing we do to reduce risk for you is run a Monte Carlo statistical process, which runs every possible market scenario to make sure that you will not run out of money. This enables us not to have to try and forecast the markets (which is like an educated guess) because it runs every different scenario to see how you are going to end up down the road.
It determines the likelihood of you running out of money. This extra step that we put in place ensures that you will have enough money to pay your last bill, and that your assets will grow enough to replace what you are spending.
Our proprietary Wealth Management Process focuses on:
- Retirement/Financial Planning
- Obtaining realistic returns on investments (balancing risks and rewards to achieve necessary funding to meet life goals)
- Creating an estate plan to both minimize taxes and capture client’s wishes concerning estate distribution
- Funding education (for children or grandchildren)
- Adequacy of insurance coverage
- Satisfying Philanthropic desires
- Providing continuity in financial management across generations
Calvert Investment Counsel
Our mission here at Calvert Investment Counsel is to relieve the financial burden (worry) of trying to do all of these things yourself. You can have the comfort that someone is taking care of it for you.
We are a completely hands-on firm and do not use any auto-pilot systems to help manage your wealth. There are many firms out there that will be happy to run you through the auto-pilot mill (computer generated plans, voice mail maze, rookies and interns, etc…) but we have chosen to build our firm on time-intensive individual relationships that work out better for you and your specific financial goals.
The team at Calvert Investment Counsel looks forward to discussing your life goals to learn how we might work for you and your family via a comprehensive, custom financial plan and a distinctive investment process that treats all aspects of your financial and retirement concerns.
